About the author - Charles Martin, 45, has written seven books, some with religious themes. He is married, has three sons and lives in Jacksonville, Florida.
The book's theme - This book's theme was definitely LOVE:
- The love of Reese and Emma drove his whole life's purpose
- Charlie's love for his sister and brother-in-law (he did not even like rowing)
- Cindy and the whole town's love for Annie
Sub-themes - (Spoilers ahead!)
- The heart - literally and figuratively. . .
- Water - It was an important element. . . it buried the town, the lake provided a physical release for Reese and Charlie, the storm gave a new beginning, and water cleansed Reese and allowed him to move on with his life.
- Buried and hidden secrets - Reese's hidden drug addiction, the secret of his identity, the buried town, the guilt and secret of the night Emma died.
We enjoyed the quotes scattered throughout the book. The medical details were accurate according to Missy. Charlie was a favorite character.
This book got some of the highest reviews in a long time. Loved it, thank Lori!!!
Note: Missy suggested that we have a "14th" member, a classic book, to add to our rotation. All agreed. Email your classic book ideas to Kelly for compilation. We may have the classic book discussion at a non-residential site. Kelly presented the possibility of a paint class as the location for the classic book discussion and maybe the theme of the book chosen could reflect some art element.
