The Aviator's Wife by Melanie Benjamin

Carol W. chose the book and hosted the discussion.

Melanie Benjamin was born in 1962. She is married and lives in Chicago and has two sons. This is her third novel. It is being optioned for a film by Jennifer Garner's film company.

Nearly all book club members loved this book! We wish pictures were included! The book cover was an artist's depiction, not actually Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Judy did not like that a "biography" was fictionalized. Pat D. likes historical fiction with fictional characters in a historical setting but NOT historical characters in fictional situations.

We loved Anne's mother's assessment that "Heroes need weak people around them." Anne was certainly not a weak woman. None of us were aware of the accomplishments of Charles Lindbergh's wife; we knew nothing of her.

We were disturbed by the way Charles treated his children, but were resigned to assume it was common in that era. The media treated them as a national treasure, hounding them day in and day out.

It's interesting that when Charles was in Germany having multiple affairs and seven children out of wedlock that he went by the alias Carew Kent. Clark Kent, flying superman, just coincidence? We wonder if Anne ever did find out about the other children.

Many of us finished the book and immediately went online to search and learn more about Anne and her family.
