This book told about the lives of two "orphans" who grew up in different generations, but whose lives had similarities. Ninety-one-year-old Vivian reminisced about her formative years with seventeen-year-old Molly who was in the modern-day foster care system. Family circumstances and a tragic fire lead to Vivian being one of many children who were scooped up from the streets of New York City in the 1920's and shipped by train to points west. As a modern day teen, Molly was alone in the foster care system. Though intelligent, Molly was a rebellious individual who was challenged in social circumstances. These two seemingly different individuals from different generations came together which was of great benefit to them both.
This book was very well-liked by members of our group. Below are some of our comments:
- We were surprised that we hadn't heard of the Orphan Train and appreciated the historical information and insight.
- Vivian's surname was changed several times during her life, but she never let that define who she was.
- We enjoyed Vivian's transformation when Molly entered her life and loved how their two lives intertwined.
- We were saddened that Vivian did not meet her direct family members before they died, especially since their deaths were relatively recent.
- We discussed why Vivian gave up her child even though he was her last connection to Dutchey.
- We loved the characters and thought it was a great story.
