Even though attendance was small we had a lively discussion on this book.
We all hated the ending. We wondered what kind of psychological illness Anne suffered. Rachael was a saint. We were disappointed that the fallout between Paul, Maddie and Luke seemed almost minor. Some expected that maybe Luke and Maddie had an affair at some time. The book did not finish some of the themes: Did Rachael and her parents talk about the secrets of the past? Did Richard and Anne keep the summer home and, if so, what was the relationship between Anne and Maddie? Did Anne have any true feelings for Luke? Did Anne ever leave her husband? Why did Richard stay married to Anne if she kept having affairs?
There were memorable paragraphs specifically at the end of chapters that made us think, contemplate even, about life and letting go and moving on.
Readers rated it highly, between 5.8 and 8.
