Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

Lori chose the book and hosted the meeting.

Lori welcomed us to her house with a bountiful, colorful display of foods. We want to thank her for hosting at such a busy tine in her family's lives.

The author, Laura Hillenbrand, was born in 1967 in Virginia and, as a child, enjoyed horses and horseback riding. Her love for horses provided inspiration for the research of her first book, Seabiscuit. Unbroken was her second novel. It took her seven years to research and write it. Only after the book was published did she finally meet Louie Zamperini in person. She is a long time victim of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and rarely leaves her home.

We loved this book! It educated us of the treatment of the POWs in Japan. When we read books about WWII, they usually focus on Germany and Hitler, so reading a book on the Pacific was enlightening. The ingenuity it took to survive at sea for 47 days, and then survive in the prison camps was incredible. Then men seemed to have endless stamina, hope, and faith of a rescue, and a strong sense of duty to their country.

This book received high marks, second only to The Help. We questioned whether we loved the book, the writing style, or just fell in love with Louie. What a remarkable man!!! He was destined for greatness and his life's experiences set him up to succeed, survive, and eventually thrive. We were disappointed that we had not heard of him or his story before this book. It makes you wonder about all of the amazing lives that will ever remain untold. So sad.
